Estonian surface water resources are estimated as the annual average runoff volume (in million m3), based on the average surface water runoff in Estonia (m3/s). The average long-term (1922-2022) runoff volume is 12897 mln m3 and the average long-term runoff is 409 m3/s.
Flows are monitored at 55 hydrometric stations. The monitoring methodology is described in the hydrological monitoring sub-programme of the National Environmental Monitoring Programme. Flows are measured at the hydrometric stations a minimum of 16 times per year. The measured flows are used to construct a runoff curve as a function of the water level and the flows, which is then used to calculate the hydrometric station runoff. The time series of hydrometric station discharges can be studied in more detail on the Historical Inland Water Monitoring Data page.
